“Tomorrow is my one year anniversary with CrossFit Waterloo and what a journey – 365 days, down 30lbs, and countless PRs. Originally I started CrossFit because I wanted to look better in clothes – November 2nd 2015 I entered my first class at CrossFit Waterloo. It was super intimidating at first but I soon realized the supportive team environment, the lack of ego and the fact that each athlete is working at their own level no matter how experienced. Apart from losing 30 pounds and building muscle this past year, I would say the most impressive change has been my attitude and confidence level, and this has improved my overall outlook on life. I went into my first class not having worked out in over a year, and remember learning how to do a burpee (I’ve done a few since then lol). Over the past year, I kept going back, four times a week, to learn and improve – I made and achieved goals I never knew I could achieve. For example last week I did 5 consecutive handstand pushups! Last June I took part in #CrossFitWaterloo’s Paleo/Nutrition lifestyle challenge and learned how poorly I was eating – even though I was already sticking to a strict daily calorie count. With the month-long challenge, I lost 15 lbs (and kept it off), and with Coach Chris’ guidance, learned about the types of food that I should be eating. Since the challenge I have incorporated meal prepping and clean food selections into my everyday routine, with as few barcodes as possible! I visited Helsinki this past June and was lucky enough to try out their CrossFit classes – and the coaches there complimented me on my form and said it looked like I had been doing #CrossFit for 4 or 5 years, not 7 months. This is a huge testament to my awesome coaches at CrossFit Waterloo – whose main focus is always safety and proper form. My original goal of wanting to look better in clothes has evolved. I get up every morning, excited to see what I can conquer with the WOD, and although I have a long way to go, I am so happy with how far I have come. Anyone close to me knows how I like talking about CrossFit, and although I am sure it annoys my spouse, I love it and can’t wait to see what I’ll be able to achieve in year two!” -Benjamin
